The Economic and Financial Crimes

that he had been arrested by the EFCC.

Asuu; Asuu speak on what Nigerians will do to avert another strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) has called on well-meaning
Nigerians to caution the Federal
Government to honour its agreement with
the union to forestall further industrial
crisis in the nation’s tertiary education
The union’s President, Prof. Biodun

with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on

Recall that the union’s National Executive
Committee (NEC) had at the end of its
meeting at the Federal University of

Federal government reveals plan to create 20 million job opportunities
Minister of Industry, Trade and
Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah said
that with the huge level of
unemployment in the country, it had
become imperative to come up with a
pragmatic approach to creating jobs for
the people.
He said the ministry had directed the
Industrial Training Fund to come up
with innovative solutions to create 20
million jobs in four sectors of the
economy within the next four years.
The sectors, according to the minister,
are agriculture, transportation,
services and construction.
Represented at the event by the
Permanent Secretary in the ministry,
Sunday Akpan, Enelamah said the
need to focus on these sectors was
borne out of the conviction that they
held the key to the diversification
efforts of the Federal Government.
The minister said with the huge
contributions of these sectors to the
Gross Domestic Product of the Nigerian
economy, it had become imperative to
explore their job creation potentials to
reduce the level of unemployment in
the country.
He said, “In order to sustain and build
on the successes recorded in this
regard in the first tenure of Mr.
President, we are articulating and
strategizing with a renewed impetus
towards combating the twin evils of
unemployment and insecurity.
“It is on this basis that the ministry
charged the Industrial Training Fund
to come up with revolutionary multi-
faceted job and wealth creation
strategies that would lead to a lasting
solution to this hydra-headed problem.
“From the report, I have received, the
ITF has been able to propose pragmatic
strategies that within the tenure of the
next level, will generate about 20
million jobs from four key sectors of
the Nigerian economy.

He noted that rather there have been
deliberate attempts by some hirelings of the
state government to blackmail the incoming

Okewulonu said, “In the course of our work, we
met thrice with the outgoing government’s
team, believing that issues agreed upon will be
strictly adhered to in their implementation.
But unfortunately, the reverse proved to be
the case.
“Rather, we have taken note of deliberate

government to blackmail the incoming governor
with baseless and spurious assertions.
“In the last couple of weeks, the mass media
have been awash that N150m was released by
Governor Okorocha to the incoming governor to

Efcc Raids Mtn Nigeria Head Office Over Share Listing
The operatives of the anti-graft agency were said to have stormed the MTN’s office in Lagos, where it met with top key officials of the company and demanded some documents relating to its listing at the NSE.

While the reason for the raid could not be ascertained at the time of reporting, Brand Spur, sources say members of the agency stormed the telco’s head office, stopping all activities for alleged fraudulent financial activities pertaining to the company’s recent listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).

“I believe the EFCC was informed that MTN was manipulating figures and also, maybe because of fraud pertaining to the company’s listing,” the source said.

Brand Spur reached out to the telco’s Public Relations Officer, Funso Aina, who neither denied nor admitted that the company was raided, but said: “We will send out a statement to that effect very soon”.

Big players in the Nigerian capital market also think that if MTN shares continue to climb the way it is rising they stand the risk of being dethroned from their vantage positions as the market leaders.

They are believed to be interested in the stories making the rounds that the scarcity of the MTN shares is a function of manipulation.

No official of the EFCC and MTN was prepared to be put on record on the matter.

MTN Nigeria was listed at a total of 20, 354,513,050 at N90 per share on May 16, after the company had completed all the necessary steps required by the NSE for listing which led to the approval.

On the day of the listing, MTN Nigeria was reported to have emerged as the second largest company on the nation’s bourse after Dangote Cement with a market capitalisation of N1.83 trillion.

In spite of its first day bullish outing, the shares of MTN Nigeria recorded its first price loss on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Friday after its listing on May 16.

The stock dipped N9 to close at N140 per share following profit taking.

The telecommunications company had listed 20.35 billion shares at N90 per share which recorded steady growth to hit N149 per share.

The market capitalisation shed N263 billion or 1.90 per cent to close at N13.601 trillion compared with N13.864 trillion recorded on Thursday.

MASSOB’s 19th Anniversary Bloody: 2 Killed, 15 Injured, 10 Arrested In Onitsha
IN what looks like a tradition, the 19th anniversary celebration of the Chief Ralph Uwazuruike-led Biafra Independence Movement, BIM, yesterday, turned bloody in Onitsha and environs as two BIM  members were allegedly  shot dead by the Police.

The celebration also led to the arrest of no fewer than 10 members of the movement, just as about 15 of them sustained various degrees of bullet wounds. Reacting to the incident, the Ogbaru Regional Administrator of BIM, Amadi Ifeanyi, aka Ochiagha, told newsmen they were hoisting their flag at about 2a.m. yesterday morning at Upper Iweka axis in preparation for the anniversary when the Police stormed the place in three Hilux vans and opened fire on them which resulted in the instant death of  two of their members. According to the Regional Administrator, “they arrested 10 of us and over 15 got bullet wounds, even when they knew that we are a non-violent organisation struggling for a Biafran state.”

Amadi, who spoke through his Director of Finance in Ogbaru, Ezeaka Martins, demanded the release of the corpses of their members, even as he identified those killed as Innocent Okoye and Uche Ezinwanne. Also speaking, Chuks Nnaedozie, the Ogbaru Director of Security, gave the names of those injured and hospitalised as Clifford Nwankwo, Ndubuisi Ikpeazu, Aloy Ibeh, and others yet to be identified. In his reaction, the Regional administrator for Onitsha North, Christian Umeaka, added that one of his members has not been seen since he was arrested by the Police when he went to hoist  the flag, adding that no amount of intimidation would stop them from struggling for a Biafran state. Attempt to get the police to react to the allegation proved abortive as the DPO incharge of the area could not be reached.
